Nissan’s GT-R set the bar earlier this year when it turned in a lap time of 7 minutes 29 seconds on Germany’s famed Nürburgring, but General Motors has beat them with a time of 7:26.4 in its new Chevy Corvette ZR1. General Motors has released the in-car footage from that record-setting lap, which took place on June 27th. Jim Mero was the pilot on that lap, running a completely stock Corvette ZR1 on pump gas.

This video is amazing. Looks like he hit about 178 MPH at certain times.

As with the other versions of the Camaro, the convertible is currently undergoing a series of tests to make sure it will be ready for production late next year in the United States. The rag-top is expected to come equipped with a similar engine to the coupe concept.

That car featured a 6.0-litre V8, delivering over 400bhp at the rear wheels, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It also had independent rear suspension, unlike past generations of Camaros.

The legions of American muscle car fans are in mourning - rising fuel prices have forced General Motors to consider using a four-cylinder engine as an option in its new Chevrolet Camaro.

The drivetrain under consideration is the turbocharged 195kW 2-litre unit used in Stateside GM models, the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadster.

GM vice-chairman Bob Lutz said at the New York motor show that if fuel prices continued to climb, a four-cylinder Camaro could see production.

GM plans V8 and V6 versions of the Camaro coupe and convertible. The V6 version will be powered by the same engine used in the Cadillac CTS, a direct-injection, 3.6-litre quad-cam unit rated at 225kW.

Motown loves old-school muscle cars with big V8 engines, fat tires and rear-wheel drive. We’re not sure why - maybe its all those Baby Boomers with disposable income trying to relive their youth - but Detroit keeps trying to build the perfect car for 1968.

Dodge has the Challenger. Ford’s got the Mustang Bullitt. And Chevrolet’s going back to the future with the Camaro. But at least General Motors realizes that the dinosaurs went extinct and is looking to bring one of its moldy oldies into the 21st century.

The Camaro may soon have a gas-electric hybrid powertrain.

According to The Car Connection, even as GM swings an axe through its design department, killing rear-wheel drive projects and a new V8 engine to meet rising fuel economy standards, it remains dedicated to the Camaro.GM is gearing up to build the Camaro in Canada. The company had hoped to maximize the return on its investment in tooling and manufacturing by using the Camaro chassis as the basis for several other rear-drivers, but must rethink that strategy.

Still, GM wants the car to be competitive with the Challenger and the Mustang, which has pretty much owned the American muscle car market for at least a decade. GM says a V6 could be the standard engine, allowing GM to give the Camaro a competitive price, and the V8 a premium option. A turbocharged engine is another consideration.

But buried at the end of the Car Connection piece is the most intriguing development - GM is believed to have assigned a team of engineers to explore adapting its two-mode hybrid drivetrain to the Camaro.

It makes sense. GM has clearly shown it believes the best place for hybrid drivetrains is big vehicles with mediocre fuel economy - hence the Yukon and Escalade hybrids - and the company plans to roll out one new hybrid every three months for the next four years.

We’re trying to get ahold of GM to find out more about its plans for the Camaro and hope to have an update soon.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The production version of the highly anticipated Chevrolet Camaro won’t be officially revealed for some time yet but, in a highly unusual move, GM won’t hide the car from prying spy photographers during test drives anymore.

Magazines and car enthusiasts pay top dollar for “spy shots” of early pre-production cars, which are usually covered in black cloth and stripes of tape to try to hide their appearance, as the cars undergo testing on public roads.

In fact, several companies now specialize in selling these pictures, while car companies do their best - or at least claim to do their best - to keep their future products under wraps.

“It’s really a cat-and-mouse game between spy photographers and car companies that benefits everybody,” said John Neff, editor of Autoblog.com, a Website that posted several Camaro spy photos. (Autoblog.com, like CNNMoney.com, is a Time Warner property.)

Starting now, however, the Chevrolet Camaro isn’t playing coy. Want to take a shot? Go for it, GM says. When Camaro prototypes go out on public roads for testing they’ll be totally naked.

“During this upcoming year, pre-production Camaros will appear both on U.S. and Australian roads as we continue with testing and development,” Chevrolet general manager Ed Peper wrote in a post on GM’s FastLane blog. “So keep those camera phones ready - if you happen to see one, we’d like to hear about it, so please post a comment and include your ’spy photo!’”

You can read the rest of the news article here.

I must say, it doesn’t look as good in this photo as most of the earlier ones I have seen. I think they have done something weird with the rear spoiler. Hopefully we get some better pictures soon.
